Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens, better called Queen Latifah in the United States is a performer and actress. Queen Latifah's work in television and music has been recognized with a Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award Six additional Grammy nominations an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah was born in and raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita a schoolteacher who worked in Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens, Jr. an officer in the police force. Her father and mother split at the time Latifah was ten years old. Latifah was a student at a Catholic school and was educated within Newark New Jersey. She was a member of in the Baptist church. The stage name Latifah which means delicate and gentle in Arabic was handed by her aunt when she was only eight. Being a tall girl, the 5'10 tall Latifah was a forward on her high school basketball team. She sang "Home" from The Wiz during a play in her high school. Latifah was part of the Ladies Fresh, a rap collective that started her beatboxing career. Latifah became a member of the Flavor Unit's first group, made up of a number of MCs and producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King, created an audition for the rapper Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. He emailed the recorded to Yo! MTV Raps who is known as Freddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the track and was signed by Latifah in 1988, to drop her debut track Wrath of My Madness.
